On March 25, 2025, the second edition of the Lodz University of Technology Chess Championships, known as the “Two Towers” tournament, took place at the Lodz University of Technology Library. The event was held under the patronage of the LIFE Mercury Free project and was part of the celebrations of the university’s 80th anniversary. It gathered a wide group of enthusiasts of the royal game. 60 participants selected from 114 applications competed in a nine-round Swiss tournament.
The competition was officially opened by the president of the AZS PŁ University Club, Dr. Ewa Brochocka, and Prof. Volodymyr Mosorov from the Institute of Applied Informatics, coordinator of the LIFE Mercury Free project. In their speeches, they emphasized the importance of the tournament not only as a form of sports competition, but also as an opportunity to integrate the academic community and promote chess among students and university employees. The event created an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the participants about the harmfulness of mercury and the risks associated with its presence in household products.
The tournament was organized with the support of the director of the PŁ Library, Dr. Eng. Adam Lenic, and Prof. Mosorov, who not only funded prizes for the best players, but also personally presented them to the winners, emphasizing the role of intellectual effort in education and science. Thanks to the excellent organization and the involvement of many people, the event took place in a sporting but friendly atmosphere.
